The striking and beautiful butterfly in this warm and comforting canvas is a part of nature’s beauty, but isn’t the only beauty on show in this artwork. The woman who is unknown is most probably from an upper class part of Russian society in the 1700s.
Clearly a beautiful subject for the original artwork, and her beauty is still evident here. Humour, fun, mystery and intrigue is at play as it is in the whole series of the Butterfly portraits. Subtlety, like the other works in the series, is somewhat removed by the brash nature of the Butterfly covering the entire face. Yet subtlety still somehow exists, as the warm tones and pallet remain undisturbed.
Again like the other works in the series, your mind’s eye almost completes the image as you scan around it.
